Attempted mugging on Park Terrace West
Three young men--ages 19 to 22, maybe?--approached me and my two partners tonight at about 10:30 p.m., on Park Terrace West right where it emerges from Isham Park. They were wearing hoodies or hats and had black scarves over their faces. One of them brandished what looked like a fake gun and said "I could blast you away right here". We were in front of a building and there were other people around, and the "gun" really did look fake, so I shouted really loudly for them to get the hell away from us while my girlfriend took out her phone to call 911. The would-be muggers decided they had somewhere else to be and went off into the park. We're usually pretty vigilant in that part of the park after dark, but I was very surprised that they would approach three of us on a Saturday night with cars and people going past. The cops said there's been a lot of this sort of thing around Isham Park recently. Please be careful, and DO walk through that area if you feel safe doing so, especially if you're in a group or have a large dog. The more people are around, the safer it is. Let's not let these jackasses take over our lovely neighborhood! Current Mood: indescribable | | Friday, July 15th, 2011 | 1:34 pm [sir_graeme]

Post Billiards Cafe...
Has anyone been to Post Billiards Cafe, the one right by the 207th Street station on the 1 line? What is it like? There is one well-written review on Yelp, but it would be great to get some more perspectives. | | Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 | 10:16 pm [cyntata2672]

Moving to Inwood
I visited your fair neighborhood on Sunday and fell in love. I had been on the fence about leaving my current place because I have been here for five years, but my visit made it so. I've asked a couple friends and co-workers for contacts to management companies, so I can avoid broker fees. I am looking to live around and Broadway or anywhere within a few blocks of either park. Does anyone have any good management companies they can refer me to? I will be moving at the end of May and will start my search at the beginning of May. Thanks in advance. | | Wednesday, March 30th, 2011 | 8:23 pm [rosefox]

Anyone know anything about the fire that is currently filling a large part of the neighborhood with smoke? | | Saturday, October 9th, 2010 | 8:05 pm [blueshoes76] |
Bedbug ? In Inwood Apartment
I fell in love with an Inwood apartment today--it's right off the 207th A stop, nice size, building seems decent. The only problem is a quick online search showed that the building has had some problem with bedbugs. One post (resident) said that he knew of many people throwing away their mattresses; a broker posted that there was only 1 apartment and it was treated. When I saw the apartment today, 1 woman I spoke to said she knew of several apartments below her that, as of the summer, still had issues with bedbugs. She said she liked the building, though, as did others I spoke to. Questions: Is this just par for the course in Manhattan? Is every large building going to have a bedbug problem because they're so ubiquitous? Would you move into a building that has/had a known issue in some apartments? The building is at 207 and Cooper, so any hints about that area would be appreciated too. Thanks. | | Friday, July 2nd, 2010 | 11:34 pm [rosefox]

Papasito: AVOID AVOID AVOID
We heard lots of buzz about Papasito opening, so we thought we'd check it out. LITTLE DID WE KNOW. The full review is on Yelp. An excerpt: A busser brought over a dish that seemed to be mostly shrimp. We said we hadn't ordered it. He brought it to the people next to us. The gentleman there said he had ordered it, but that they had requested for all their food to come together. After some negotiation, the busser took it away.
The music got louder. We stopped trying to talk to each other.
The waiter brought over a dish that seemed to be mostly shrimp. We repeated that we hadn't ordered it. The scenario at the table next to us played out again. I suggested to the waiter that it would be nice to bring all our food at once.
A different busser brought over a dish that seemed to be mostly shrimp. By this time we were giggling. It felt like some sort of absurd dinner theater. We might try it again in three months once they've got their act together. Or we might not. Current Mood: disgusted | | Sunday, February 21st, 2010 | 10:46 pm [rosefox]

Hawk, again
Even in Inwood, one does not expect to glance out one's window and see a full-sized hawk chowing down right there on top of your Air Conditioner. Not sure if this could be the same hawk I saw around last month. The coloring and plumage look different but that is apparently something that can happen with age. Any votes on whether this be the same hawk or different? Anyway, once I tried to get him from the window my air conditioner actually squats on, he wasn't cool and flew away. First time I've ever had occasion to flinch at the mere sound of that kind of wingspan taking flight. | | Saturday, November 28th, 2009 | 1:19 pm [rosefox]

Photos on Sale Today at Farmers' Market!
Hey Inwood, I wanted to let you know that from around 9:30am today, I will have a table set up at the outside corner of the Inwood Farmer's Market where 4x6 matted prints and 8x10 framed prints are in the offing. I will also have my entire catalogue in a binder and I hope to take orders for the holiday. Though I have taken pictures all over the place, for the Inwood Farmer's Market I have mostly gathered a collection of photos taken locally to our parks and neighborhood. My portfolio is at http://jonreznick.smugmug.com, and if you like what you see, please stop by and meet me this morning/early afternoon! | | Thursday, November 5th, 2009 | 11:03 am [sinboy]

Waiterfail at the Garden Cafe
So, there's a new waiter at the garden cafe who proceeded to - make a joke about there being only wine and beer at the cafe because we're too close to the church, so priests might steal the whiskey, ignore rosefox's "I need a bit more time" and ask me what I wanted instead, and make a bunch of slightly off jokes. Any of these would have been forgivable. But then after our meal, we wanted the check, and the waiter was deep in conversation with friends at another table for about 5 minutes, with his back turned to us. So, after clanking our flatware, waiting, getting no response, then waiting some more, go back to the front and ask for my check. Even that would have been an annoyance I could overlook. But the waiter gets angry, and is rude to me, telling me not to go down and get the manager, but to come to him first. No apology. Just being cranky at me. I hardly ever don't tip. In fact, I tip 20% off the post tax total regularly. This is the first person I've not given any tip whatsoever since I can't remember when. | | Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 | 6:20 pm [noctolator]

Hawk smites pigeon @ 44 Seaman Ave [Photo Blog]
Hi, many of you may have seen or participated in a brief and spontaneous spectacle at 44 Seaman today around 5pm where a real live young hawk [an eyas] was seen chowing down on pigeon. I was the guy with the telephoto lens, and while I'm about to email some of these pictures to the folks on the scene who gave me their addresses, I wanted you guys to see this too. ( Click for images )Apparently, according to an on-the-scene expert, being this unabashed around people indicates the hawk is more likely than not to come to some harm [by people, I presume]. | | Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 | 4:12 pm [mistersmearcase]

Villa Patron!
I guess this is a little dumb but I wanted to spread the word that Villa Patron at Dyckman/Nagle is really good! I lived in Texas for seven years and am highly snooty about Mexican food, and I really do like the place. I'm posting this because it seems like there's never anyone in there when I go in and I'm afraid the one place in the nabe I particularly like could go under. Oh, also, I think they finally got their liquor license, so, as it says in Genesis, let there be margaritas. Aright, that's my two pesos. p.s. hi, new to group. | 11:37 am [auntiemisha]

Eat the park!
Sunday Aug 30 http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com/ The 4-hour walking tour begins at 11:45 AM, Sunday, August 30, at the playground at Dykeman St. and Broadway, which is not in Inwood Hill Park. Call (914) 835-2153 at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a place.
I went on a tour of his in Yonkers and had a fabulous time! Alas I may not be able to get to his tour in Inwood Hill Park. | | Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 | 5:29 pm [fierygelfling]

I'm moving and need boxes
I've checked craigslist, and all of the people posting about "free boxes" are in the UWS, UES, Queens, Brooklyn, or other places far, far away from Inwood. Any suggestions for a car-less person living at 207th and Sherman who doesn't really want to schlep a bunch of boxes via subway or taxi all over Manhattan? I hate moving. So very, very much. | | Friday, August 7th, 2009 | 12:48 pm [sinboy]

Who wants to start running?
I need a morning jogging/workout buddy for morning runs at Inwood Hill Park. Anyone interested in joining me? Doesn't have to be every morning, but I need someone to keep me going. I'm just getting started at jogging again, but after a week or so, I expect to be up to a good amount of jogging. Who's in? |
